12-18th of May 2014
This week is Coeliac Disease awareness week. Coeliac disease affects approximately 1% of the population. If you have had a long history of any of the following symptoms or problems, it is worth discussing with your GP or Gastroenterologist obtaining a simple blood test for Coeliac Disease:
Diarrhoea
Unexplained tiredness
Bloating
Unexplained anaemia
A history of Irritable Bowel Syndrome (IBS)
Vomiting
Lactose intolerance
Fractures / Back pain
Decreased fertility
Coeliac disease is caused by a protein in wheat, rye and barley called gluten. It causes damage to the lining of the gut and reduces the absorption of essential nutrients and this can have a significant impact on quality of life as well as contributing to problems such as thin bones (osteoporosis).
If you have thyroid disease or type 1 diabetes, then there is a higher risk of having Coeliac Disease.
The diagnosis of Coeliac Disease is confirmed by undertaking an upper GI endoscopy to take samples of the lining of the small bowel. It is a quick and safe procedure in the vast majority of people.

Treatment is to remove the offending gluten from the diet and many people will feel a significant improvement in their quality of life as well as reducing their risk of disease associated with untreated Coeliac disease.
