What does a Gastroenterologist treat?
Dr Mayhead investigates gut symptoms such as diarrhoea, constipation, abdominal pain, bloating, reflux and heartburn, nausea and rectal bleeding. These symptoms are sometimes the first signs of serious illness such as bowel cancer, inflammatory bowel disease (IBD), Crohn’s disease, ulcerative colitis, coeliac disease or gastrointestinal ulcers but often are caused by more benign conditions such as gastroesophageal reflux disorder (GORD), haemorrhoids or irritable bowel syndrome (IBS). Accurate diagnosis, through appropriate testing, allows for the right treatment strategy to be put in place.
Dr Mayhead has been a Consultant Gastroenterologist since 2009 and holds a consultant post at East Kent NHS Trust. He has a specialist interest in endoscopy, particularly advanced colonoscopy, the removal of bowel polyps and capsule endoscopy.
